Matt, I'm probably a bit hard on the photo mags, for many people they offer a lot of good info. It just seems like there's this huge gap between basic magazines which do little more than so-so gear reviews and excellent fashion/design magazines, which have a ton of awesome info for photographers.

Of course, there's probably a ton of graphic designers out there who feel like their magazine world is laking in good publications. Maybe they all read Popular Photography for inspiration.

PDN is a good mention, since it focuses on the business side of things and really is marketed towards professionals. Hence the content has to be more engaging and useful to working pros.

Thanks for the non-photo mag suggestions. I've been feeling a bit stifled by my literature input lately, so this is helpful. The photo mags i think are actually useful when you're starting out, because they do cover the basics that a design mag would not address. But once you move beyond that point, you have to look elsewhere for non-tech-oriented brain stimulation. I've actually been working the library shelves in the painting section, looking for discussions on composition etc that aren't specifically photography related.

I seem to learn more (photographically speaking) these days from browsing Wired or Men's Vogue or even Golf magazine, than I do from reading a photo mag!

One mag that still has something to offer though is PDN. Probably because it's aimed at the pro rather than the amateur.

I'll check out some of your suggestions next time I go to the bookstore!

Aperture is a pretty high-class photography magazine. It would be excellent to have a portfolio featured there sometime. I miss you too, I won't have phone/internet till August it seems, but I'll reconnect with you then.

Cool post. You got me thinking about a magazine I loved in college, Aperture. I think I liked it because Sally Mann was in it, who I liked. I checked out all the books and magazines and journals I could find with her work. However, it was before I discovered the web or before it was discovered or something. So, I just had a pleasant evening googling Sally Mann. Thanks for that.

Hope all is well. I miss you!
